September Proclaimed as ​Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis released the following statement after the Board of Supervisors approved her motion proclaiming September 2019 as ‘Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month’:

“Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancer in the United States, with approximately 14,000 deaths and 23,000 new cases of ovarian cancer every year.

The early stages of ovarian cancer have no obvious symptoms. There are also no valid screening tests for most women, further compounding the difficulty of diagnosis. Additionally, studies have shown that there also exists significant disparities by race and ethnicity in treatment and mortality rates.

Because ovarian cancer typically cannot be diagnosed early enough to provide life-saving treatment, prevention research and screening is the first priority. This month, we affirm our commitment to working with cancer researchers, epidemiologists, gynecologic oncologists, and all of our partners to ensure that this disease receives the equitable awareness and funding that women deserve.”
